We left Taos this morning for a start on our return trip home. After a rather uneventful drive where we only spotted 3 cars in about 4 hours, we arrived in Bayfield, CO. The country side did look rather uninviting. I kept thinking if we had a flat tire or engine trouble, not a lot of help available. Bayfield is a tiny spot on the South Western corner of Colorado. Population about 2500. We parked and setup camp. Then we promptly took a nap. We were awakened by a rather noisy rain squall. Came down pretty hard for a bit and then stopped, only to repeat about an hour later. Although the temps are not terribly high, about 78, the sun is intense here. No clouds and very clear skies. We turned on the A/C in the trailer and spent the afternoon catching up on news on our Roku. Not planning on any sightseeing on our return to home but we can now add Colorado as a state we have camped in. Too wet to set up the grill this evening, so a cup of hot soup will be dinner.
Day 24 05/25/18 Our last day in Great Falls and we are compelled to see where the name came from. Back in the car and out to the middle of nowhere to see one of the friggin falls. Seems the Louis and Clark expedition found this falls. However in the early 1900's the city fathers thought it would be a great idea to build a dam and make electricity. Here is a pic of their efforts. From here we went to the First Peoples Buffalo jump. This remarkable geologic area has been used for thousands of years by local tribes to drive buffalo up and over the hills to kill them for food and their hides. One of the interesting facts we learned was that the natives for thousands of years were barefoot. The horse was not introduced to North America until the 1700's. It was said that native tribes from all over the area came to use the buffalo jump. Supposedly there is 18' of buffalo debris still buried beneath the hill. Not much...
