Day 13 05/14/18

I am writing this on my computer because the Internet is almost unusable to post to my blog.  We are camping at Whistlers Campground in Jasper National Park.  Which is the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies. This is one of the steam locomotives that used to pull thru town.

We set off this morning to Athabasca Falls.  A huge waterfall that has eaten away at the rock creating a spectacular falls.  I am adding a photo I took of a bear trap at the campground entrance.  Bears are a problem and all food and other types of treats must be kept inside the trailer.

On to Athabasca Falls.  I will try and add a fabulous pic of the falls if this internet will allow.  I have added a picture of a crow at the falls.  This was the largest crow I have ever seen.  Probably about 5 lbs.

Seems that there are a huge amount of Asian travelers on bus tours.  All very pleasant and all smiles.  We haven’t seen many US license plates either in town or on the roads.  We did see an Oregon plate but other than the one we seem to be the only Americans on the roads.  Lots of rental RV’s on the road also.  I believe many are from Europe as they land on the west coast and then rent these all-in-one RV’s to travel and see another country.

After the falls we continued on another hour to Columbia Icefield and Athabasca Glacier.  If you haven’t seen a glacier up close their size is beyond description.  Just a huge piece of ice nestled into the side of the mountain.  Their size defies description.  I would only suggest that once in your lifetime you should take a trip and visit a glacier.  We stopped at the visitors center and had lunch.  Did I mention how expensive everything is up here.  Sue had a small cup of chili and I had a hamburger.  Only $31 Canadian dollars.  Still with the conversion rate it was about a $25 dollar lunch.  Sue then took a hike for about  30 minutes while Gracie and I sat in the car.  We then proceeded back to the campground, about an hours drive.  I took the car and filled it with gas and went to the market.  Then back to the trailer for a well deserved nap.  Sue reminds me that on the way back we came upon three cars that were stopped by the side of the road.  Sure enough a photo opportunity arose.  Lo and behold, it was a young black bear eating whatever was of interest right next to the road.  Don’t know if they are aware of the cars.  Of course no one got out to take a closer look.  Glad I had a telephoto lens on.

P.S. Good thing we also brought the Good Sam camping book as a gift from the Bay’s.  Without
the internet we could not search for the next campground.  But the camping book gave us good
suggestions.

Day 24  05/25/18 Our last day in Great Falls and we are compelled to see where the name came from.  Back in the car and out to the middle of nowhere to see one of the friggin falls.  Seems the Louis and Clark expedition found this falls.  However in the early 1900's the city fathers thought it would be a great idea to build a dam and make electricity.  Here is a pic of their efforts. From here we went to the First Peoples Buffalo jump.  This remarkable geologic area has been used for thousands of years by local tribes to drive buffalo up and over the hills to kill them for food and their hides.  One of the interesting facts we learned was that the natives for thousands of years were barefoot.  The horse was not introduced to North America until the 1700's.  It was said that native tribes from all over the area came to use the buffalo jump.  Supposedly there is 18' of buffalo debris still buried beneath the hill.  Not much...
Day 26  05/27/18 We arrived in Billings, MT at about 2 P.M.  An uneventful trip through vast stretches of territory.  A number of ranches dotting the country side.  I am still battling a cold, but with the help of Cold-Eze, it has shortened the coughing spells.  Still a little weak, so I decided a nap made a lot of sense.  Took, same.  We find ourselves in a KOA which I am not a fan of, but they had the highest ratings in the area.  They are usually set up as a destination location for families with children.  Place looks like a miniature Disneyland.  Swimming pool, Adventure miniature golf course, hot tub, jungle jim, etc.  You get the picture.  All with a bunch of screaming kids.  Ugh.  I have to reflect on W.C. Fields line of "Get away from me kid. you bother me."
Day 39 6/8/18 What a night we had.  Early evening the wind started to pick up.  Got windier and windier.  The saplings that were planted by our trailer were about 8' tall.   They were bending in the middle and the branches were parallel to the ground.  The trailer was feeling every blast.  I became so concerned that I pulled in the slide out dinette for about 45 minutes until the wind subsided.  Then came something totally unexpected.  I was watching out one of the windows and the horizon lit up with lightning flashes.  I have never experienced what we saw for the next two hours.  The lighting flashes occurred simultaneously three and four and sometimes five flashes at the same time.  This went on for a two hours.  Thankfully they were far enough away that we couldn't hear the thunder which must have been deafening.  I can't imagine living in a place where that occurs.  Amazing. Today was a travel day to Dou...
