Day 38
06/07/18
Did I mention that Pine Haven has a population of 427 souls. Not a thriving metropolis. Fortunately across the street is Paradise Market which caters to the locals. Basic but functional.
We headed out to the Devil's Monument of movie fame. That is one big monolith.
The Native American legend has it that three little natives were standing on a little rock when a bear approached. The girls became frightened and prayed for the rock to save them. So according to legend, the rock just grew and grew to the sky saving the girls. The bear, incensed on losing lunch tried to claw his way up. Hence the claw marks on the sides. He was not able to reach them and there they stay. Safe.
Just a quick aside. While pulling a trailer you are attuned to the rhythms of the multiple tires and always wary of a blowout. Well the other day as we were traveling I heard a thrumming noise coming from the tires. I paid no attention to it but as we continued on, it became louder and louder. Finally fearing that one of the bearings on the trailer was failing, I stopped and felt the wheels. They were all just warm to the touch. Thank goodness. Turns out the Wyoming in some inimitable wisdom had cut grooves in the road for possibly traction during the winter, who knows. In any event all was good and I swallowed my heart and we continued on. I don't believe AAA works these remote areas.
After Devil's Monument we stopped for lunch in Sundance, a small town of about 600 and had a burger. Then back to the trailer. Tomorrow we travel to Douglas, WY, halfway between our destination of Cheyenne.

ReplyDeleteWe stopped by Devil's Monument in 1987. Very impressive.
